When people hear “deep tissue massage,” they sometimes picture an hour of gritting their teeth, holding their breath, and trying to tolerate as much pressure as possible.
At RYE – Restore Your Essence, that’s not what deep tissue is about.
Deep Tissue Should Have a Purpose
Deep tissue massage is designed to address deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, particularly in areas where you may be experiencing chronic tension, tightness, or restriction.
But deeper doesn’t automatically mean better.
Applying extremely heavy pressure simply because you booked a deep tissue massage isn’t the goal. Every technique and level of pressure should have a reason behind it. The goal is to work with your body—not fight against it.
Your Deep Tissue Massage Is Tailored to You
No two bodies carry tension exactly the same way, which is why no two deep tissue sessions should feel exactly the same.
At RYE, your massage is adjusted based on what your body needs that day. That may include:
- Moderate or firm pressure rather than maximum pressure
- Slower, more intentional movements
- Focused work on specific areas of tension
- Gradually increasing pressure as the tissue begins to relax
- Spending more time on certain muscle groups instead of treating every area the same
- Adjusting techniques or pressure based on your feedback
Some areas of your body may tolerate deeper pressure beautifully, while another area may need a much gentler approach.
That’s okay.
Discomfort and Pain Aren’t the Same Thing
During focused deep tissue work, you may occasionally experience what people describe as a “good hurt”—an intense sensation that still feels productive and manageable.
What you shouldn’t feel is pain that makes you tense your entire body, hold your breath, pull away, or wish the therapist would hurry up and move on.
When your body is guarding against the pressure, adding even more pressure isn’t necessarily helping.
Pain is not proof that the massage is working.
Communication Is Part of the Session
Your massage therapist can observe how your muscles respond, but we can’t feel exactly what you’re feeling.
That’s why communication is always welcome at RYE.
If you want more pressure, less pressure, or want an area approached differently, speak up. You’re never “complaining” or ruining the session by asking for an adjustment. Your feedback helps create a massage that is actually effective for your body.
Deep Tissue Can Still Be Restorative
Deep tissue massage doesn’t have to feel like something you have to survive.
It can be slow. It can be intentional. It can incorporate firm, focused work while still giving your nervous system an opportunity to settle.
At RYE – Restore Your Essence, deep tissue isn’t about seeing how much pressure you can tolerate.
It’s about finding the right pressure, techniques, and pace to help your body feel and move better.
Because effective bodywork should have intention behind it—not pain for pain’s sake.
